The rubber sandals have been closely associated with officers, soldiers, and leader Ho Chi Minh during the two resistance wars against the French colonialists and American imperialists. They symbolize the resilient spirit during the challenging war years of Vietnamese soldiers.
The rubber sandals are a creative and unique product of the Vietnamese people, found only in Vietnam. During the long resistance wars, the economy was difficult, and material life was lacking, so rubber sandals were widely used by officers, soldiers, and the people. Wearing shoes was cumbersome, especially when marching through mountainous terrain in the rain, as shoes would become water bags on the feet, providing a good habitat for leeches. Therefore, soldiers often used rubber sandals for marching and fighting. Using rubber sandals made everything easier. In sunny weather, they were light and easy to move in, and in muddy conditions, they could be cleaned with a little water and continue to be used. Thus, rubber sandals are considered witnesses of history, carrying the spirit and breath of the era.
Around the story of rubber sandals, President Ho Chi Minh once jokingly told officials on the way to work that these were the thousand-mile shoes from old fairy tales... The magical shoes that could go anywhere. The rubber sandals accompanied him for 20 years, even abroad. International friends affectionately called his sandals "Uncle Ho's Sandals."
The Ho Chi Minh rubber sandals have been preserved at the Ho Chi Minh Museum for decades, crafted by artisan Pham Quang Xuan and colleagues. The history of rubber sandals is retold by artisan Pham Quang Xuan, who has been dedicated to recreating the legendary sandals for over 50 years.
The Legend of Footsteps History
President Ho Chi Minh's sandals were created during the Viet Bac Autumn-Winter campaign of 1947 from a military car tire of the French colonialists ambushed by our troops in Viet Bac. Over time, the rubber sandals evolved into various models associated with different historical campaign milestones: Ho Chi Minh Sandals 1947, Soldier Sandals 1954, Khe Sanh Sandals 1968, and Liberation Army Sandals 1975.
During the "Legend of Footsteps" event, organized by the Ho Hoan Kiem and Hanoi Old Quarter Management Board to commemorate the 133rd birthday of President Ho Chi Minh, several images and models of recycled rubber sandals were showcased. These sandals, made from old tires, accompanied many military units during the wars of the previous century. The event aimed not only to present the image of rubber sandals and their historical significance tied to the leader of the nation but also to highlight the spirit of learning and emulating President Ho Chi Minh's virtues of diligence, thrift, integrity, and righteousness.

Artisans making rubber sandals also mentioned: "Globally, 1.5 billion tires are discarded annually. These would become a massive and extremely hazardous waste if not for the involvement of environmentalists or recycling businesses.
